The Parents

From the very beginning, both of us, Erum and Mohsin, Zoya's parents, have been actively immersed in every step of her medical journey. Over the past 2.5 months, our consistent engagement has prompted doctors to frequently inquire about our medical background. Our central role revolved around posing relevant questions and thoroughly understanding the potential risks and benefits associated with each adjustment in Zoya's medical plan.

Both of us committed the majority of our daily time to be present with Zoya in her NICU room. This not only provided comfort to Zoya but also served as a learning opportunity for us. We actively participated in the morning huddles, which allowed us to grasp the daily plan and closely monitor Zoya's progress. Recognizing the significance of being part of these discussions and sessions, we embraced the role of being the right advocates for Zoya. It became a crucial aspect of our commitment to ensuring the best possible care and decisions for our precious daughter.

As parents, we ensured to hold Zoya in the warmth of our arms. Due to Zoya's neck instability, holding her directly with bare hands wasn't feasible. Instead, we cradled her using the Z-Flow mattress designed with memory foam. Every day, we spent a few hours holding Zoya, and during these moments, she was most comfortable. Nestled with her mamma and pappa, she would sleep unbothered and undisturbed. On the day of extubation, January 5th, we transitioned to comfort care, and both of us had the chance to take turns holding Zoya for the very first time without the Z-Flow mattress. Words cannot capture the profound emotions we experienced that day as we finally held our beautiful fairy Zoya, our "pyari pari," so close to us. While we desired that the intimate act of holding her in a skin-to-skin embrace wouldn't be a fleeting moment, it ultimately signified her poignant departure, leaving a lasting impact on our memories.

Zoya took her last breaths cradled in her papa's arms, where he gently combed her hair, a tender ritual he always performed. Her mamma delicately placed a bow on her, creating a poignant and cherished moment. Though bittersweet, these final moments of closeness encapsulated the love and connection we shared with our dear Zoya as she peacefully embarked on her journey beyond.
